New Format Idea for DC IPNBT 2009 - Vote on it. - 2008/11/07 04:37 All,

DC Indo-Pak Basketball committee has always looked at ways to add new features to our tournament so that all the players can enjoy something different each year. In past years, we brought the following to IPB:

• Shot Clock
• A live Bracket selection Lottery
• 2 on 2 Mini Tournament
• 5 bracket play games

In the spirit of adding new features to the DC Tourney, we have been discussing an idea for this year's tournament to add something fresh to IPB and help get the buzz going on the discussion boards.

The idea is to have our normal 12-team, dual division tournament, where each team is guaranteed 5 bracket-play games. The makeup of the teams however, will not be what you think. Rather than playing with your normal team, the tournament would consist of 12, 7-man teams, drafted by individual GMs.

How would this work? This is what we have in mind:

1. In order to have 12, 7-man teams we need a total of 84 players. Players would register individually through PayPal and put down a deposit (would be given back at the tournament) + their tournament fee.

2. Once 84 players have registered, the DC Committee will identify the top-12 players in the field, and make each of them GMs of their own team. We will identify these 12-players based on a variety of characteristics, including previous individual accomplishments (i.e. Tournament MVP, 1st Team, 2nd Team selections) as well as the individual player’s role on their respective team.

3. After the field has been solidified and the GMs have been selected, we will have a “fantasy style” draft on the message board, during the weeks leading up to the tournament. We hope that this will generate some talk and pre-tourny hype and bring some life back to the message board.

4. All teams will be guaranteed 5 bracket games, with the Top-4 teams from each division advancing the Sunday’s single-elimination playoffs.

Now obviously this is an extremely unorthodox idea, and many players may be quick to write it off. However, there are some factors that could make this new format very interesting (see below):

• 7 man team rosters assures each player will get significant amount of playing time.

• All teams will get a chance to play 5 bracket play games to gel, develop chemistry and make the playoffs.

• Everyone should be interested to watch these games since these are literally new teams. Also, this tournament format levels the playing field, and will take away the competitive advantage of the top-tier teams, who rely on chemistry and experience to win.

• Distributing the top 12 players as captains that will make each team competitive.

• Most important this will build IPB friendships as players get a chance to play alongside players the normally compete against.

We still envision that teams would still travel down together and stay together in DC like they normally do to split expenses but you will be playing against your own teammates with new teammates. Afterwards you still hangout with your boys and maybe now also hangout that weekend with your new team as well.

Again this is an idea that we are mulling over for this years tournament. We would like to get all the players input on what they think about this. It will help us on deciding if we will go with this format or not this year.

Let the discussion begin!!!

Can some of you guys who are for and against the idea post your thoughts?

Thanks!

Re:New Format Idea for DC IPNBT 2009 - Vote on it. - 2008/11/09 05:24 This is a great idea,

So many people will come. It will create parody, and comradery; two aspects of IPB that have been said to be missing.

It is a fairly easy concept, and it should go over well. This kind of format will pack the gym, as regular "teammates" in their respected home cities will come to cheer on their other teammates who will be on different teams.

It will also take away the "super team", each team will have their superstars, and it will take a TEAM effort to gel, and coexist.

This is the kick in the butt IPB needs. Players from all over that have never been exposed to IPB will have the oppurtunity to play, their will be new talent, and who knows, maybe new permanant teams.

This is very FUN, and after all, that is what basketball is all about. FUN!

Re:New Format Idea for DC IPNBT 2009 - Vote on it. - 2008/11/09 16:27 I agree... it is what IPB needs ... but not sure it's what IPB wants ?

I am all for it...

all games would be toss ups and intense... and the obvious other reasons stated above...

I also think it allows players that are not on teams an opportunity to compete and maybe get picked up by a team for future tournaments ...

Also allows players to play different roles....

Re:New Format Idea for DC IPNBT 2009 - Vote on it. - 2008/11/10 08:48 It would be fun and interesting to see a draft as I'm sure you would see a lot of ego's get hurt or made bigger depending on where person gets drafted, but I would be against the idea as I think there are too many drawbacks.

One problem would be that if people still travel like they normally do as a team... everyone would literally have to spend the entire day at the gym because it would be likely that one of your teammates would be playing from the start of the day to the end. Having 1 or 2 cars between 10 or so guys and most likely them being on different teams would really make it a tiring weekend with very little chance to go out and enjoy the city.

Basketball wise... you normally have 12 or 15 teams interested in the tournament with about 9-10 players on each team. I'm thinking that there would be a lot of players left off rosters but I guess that can be similar to how there are always some teams that don't get invites to the tournament as well.

To me, it's more rewarding playing with your boys, regardless if you win or lose, than it is playing with other players... especially if it's an attempt to stack your team just to win.
To each their own though.

I'm sure many teams just enjoy the whole experience of traveling and getting away from home for a bit just to run some basketball. The time leading up to the tournament where everyone gets together and go over plays and stuff is fun as well. There's always hype leading up to each tournament but people keep the hype to their respective teams by either calling or emailing each other. Just because people don't post on this board doesn't mean people don't look forward to these tournaments. I think people would rather have conversations amongst their own boys and also not talk smack publicly and as a result, they hesitate to post on public forums.
